I watched a reel yesterday that really spoke to me and got me mulling things over: I now have a question for you… when things feel too much emotionally, which would describe you best?
- I push through, ignore the overwhelm and push my body despite how I’m feeling.
- I listen to my body and take any opportunity to rest before reaching burnout.
I am definitely guilty of being a push through Paula; I can’t help it. It’s something that when I look back, I can identify burnouts every six months or so for this exact reason: I don’t know how to listen to my body. And I can’t even blame my kids for this one! Like a lot of things in my adult life it’s something I’ve had to learn to do.
The problem with being a push through Paula is that pushing through can only take you so far. I know that I can push through for days, weeks, even months sometimes but inevitably it will result in burnout (and that ain’t pretty!) So isn't it actually more efficient to learn when to take a break?!
Two of my biggest problems are not being able to say no and putting other people’s needs before my own. Both are things I’m going to have to unlearn and reset some boundaries around - both of which I know will take hard work. I’m not afraid of hard work but I am afraid of staying the same so what better time to start than now right?!
We returned from Disneyworld 5 days ago and I.AM.TIRED! I could have forced myself to get back into the swing of things straight away but I just can’t do it. I need a few days to just breathe and be before life resumes. Jet lag has kicked us in the arse and in the words of my 5 year old…”if you’re tired, just rest mummy” so I have! And you know what? The Earth is still spinning! This way, I know that when I do get back on the treadmill, I’ll feel rested and ready to go (ha, hopefully!)
I know it’s not always possible to take a break, but trust me…if you don’t make the time, your body will force you into it. How can you take just half an hour for yourself today?
